America’s Next Top Model Cycle 18 – Episode 8: Recap

Tyra Banks ANTM

Last night on America’s Next Top Model seven girls battled it out to open a runway show in front of fashion’s most important people. Who rose the occasion and who fell flat on their face? Keep reading…

The episode kicks off with Alisha in shock after being in the bottom two in last week’s panel. She had just come off a winning week and the surprising demotion is a serious wake-up call. Both of her parents have three jobs each just to be able to take care of their family. More than ever Alisha sees how important winning that $100,000 contract at the end of the competition is. She vows to give it her all this week.

Tyra Mail: Hope by now you’ve hit your stride. The fashion elite await.

Branding expert Martin Lundstrum pops up on screen to remind the girls about first impressions. He warns Seymone about her bad body language on set and Sophie and Eboni about getting too confident.

The girls meet Kelly Cutrone at the famous Beverly Hills Hotel for a runway show casting. The show will be for the Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize. The Fashion Prize is a competition where designers go head-to-head in a challenge to create a unique and wearable collection; the winner gets $40,000 and a coveted slot in Paris Fashion Week. The show is judged by fashion’s tastemakers including Giovanna Battaglia, Derek Blasberg, Elizabeth Saltzman, Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and Karen Craig, and Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein. The model whose designer wins will get a trip to any of the Dorchestor Collection hotels.

First stop is a casting for Annda Neen, an accessories line designed by sisters Phoebe and Annette Stephens. The girls begin to walk one by one and the nerves start to show. The first to crumble under pressure is Catherine who slips during her casting. Kelly Cutrone is so disappointed in the girls because none of them are standing out like she hoped. “They look like robots on oxy cotton,” she says.

Sophie uses her Oxford roots to bond with Siki Im who was educated at the Oxford School of Architecture. It is no surprise when he books Sophie to open his show.

Alisha gets booked to open Annda Neen, Annaliese opens Julian Louise and Sophie also lands Giuletta, which means she is in the lead with two. Models who aren’t opening still get a chance to walk in the shows.

Kelly takes a moment to talk to the girls before the show and lets Seymone know that her “walk is not happening”. Seymone’s consistently bad attitude makes another appearance after hearing this news leaving the other girls wondering when Tyra will finally kick her to the curb.

When it comes to show time Alisha impresses everyone with a fantastic walk and  her designer Annda Neen wins the Dorchester Fashion Prize making her the challenge winner.

Tyra Mail: Who knew couture could be so purr-fect?

The girls meet Jay Manuel at Siren Studios for a very unique Hello Kitty couture shoot. Behind the camera is 16 year old Seventeen Magazine Pretty Amazing contest winner Ann He. The girl’s outfits are all one of a kind made by Francis Libiran, a renowned Filipino designer.

Alisha carries her new found confidence on set totally smashing the competition and completely embodying the persona of her garment.

Sophie, who usually does amazing in her photoshoots, is unsure of what she wants to bring to the shot and ends up not impressing both Ann and Jay.

Then comes Seymone, or should I say Debbie Downer, complaining about her head piece right to Jay! Her bad temperament completely spoils the  mood of her shoot.

Panel:

Guest judging on this week’s panel is Georgina Chapman, half of the design duo behind Marchesa.

Side note: Tyra Bank’s lady bumps are humongous in her dress!!!

Seymone

Seymone: Nigel Barker says the shot looks like “modeling 101”. Georgina says that Seymone may have struggled because of the weight of her garment, that it would be a “big job for anybody”. Kelly holds nothing back telling Seymone that the “angle of your body is so disturbing. You look like a hitchhiker in Hello Kitty Land who was left behind.”

Laura

Laura: The judges don’t hate it or love it. Tyra reminisces about being jealous of her friends in school who had all of the Hello Kitty dolls.

Eboni

Eboni: Georgina wishes that Eboni had more quirk or humor behind her eyes.

Catherine

Catherine: Nigel thinks the body language is too obvious. Kelly compares it to The Exorcist. Georgina compliments Catherine for the strength in her eyes.

Alisha

Alisha: Kelly, who has been rooting for Alisha from the start, says that she loves the pictures and it reminds her of Mugler ads. Nigel admits it is the best picture from Alisha yet.

Sophie

Sophie: While Georgina loves Sophie’s body Kelly doesn’t like her face in the shot.

Annaliese

Annaliese: Nigel thinks that her face looks odd but Georgina loves it and says she would even put it in her Marchesa look book. Kelly tells the other judges that in the challenge she could see Annaliese was in it to win it.

Tyra calls Alisha first; another win for the Brit. Sophie is in second place followed by Catherine, Laura and Annaliese. Seymone and Eboni find themselves in the bottom two. Why? Tyra thinks they are both ungrateful for the opportunity they were generously given.

Tyra saves Eboni and sends Seymone packing.
